FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Question: What is a Health Coach?
Answer: A Health Coach is a guide and mentor who empowers you to take responsibility for your own health. Your coach is there to support you with implementing and sustaining lifestyle and behavior changes that will contribute to the achievement of your personal wellness goals. Some common areas where a health coach may help a client to focus include but are not limited to:
- Weight Management
- Thinking Patterns
- Food Cravings
- Emotional Attachments
- Energy Level
- Stress Management
- Happiness Level
Traditional medical professionals play specific individual roles in contributing to an individual’s overall wellness. There are specialists for every physical (and non-physical) health concern you can think of. However, the conventional medical system fails to integrate all of the areas into one whole being. This makes it really difficult and sometimes impossible to effectively create lasting healthy lifestyle transformations.
Physicians, nurses, dietitians and other health-care professionals serve crucial functions in the health care system. The problem is they may not have the time or intent to discuss other factors that prevent people from carrying out their well-intentioned recommendations. Health coaches serve a unique function that fills this void in the current health-care system. Holistic health coaches are professionals who have a burning passion for wellness and a lively zest for life. The training to become certified is a yearlong program and is powerfully designed to transform the person who chooses to embark on the health coach journey. Once the program is completed, the health coach is certified by the institution offering the training and is encouraged to promote sound, foundational health concepts to people all over the world.
The main goal is to support people in achieving permanent health transformations that last a lifetime. Health coaches usually have a strong focus on behavioral choices and mental/emotional health. This combined with the basic understanding of dietary patterns, digestive anatomy and systemic functions, creates a space for providing powerful recommendations.
As my client you will:
- work to achieve and maintain your ideal weight
- set and accomplish goals in a way that is empowering and exciting
- understand and reduce your cravings
- increase your energy levels
- feel great in your body
- increase your physical activity
- learn about new foods and how you can easily incorporate them
- improve your personal relationships
- discover the confidence to create the life you want
Health coaches fulfill an important and distinct role that does not rely on an advanced degree in medicine, nutrition science or dietetics. Having experienced all of the health transformations and things I dealt with in life adds a significant personal element to my health coaching mix. Since, I know what it is like to be on the other side of balance, I can relate very closely to a lot of what my clients deal with.
There are many personal trainers and health coaches who were either raised in a healthy and balanced environment or have been skinny or in shape their whole life. I am sure they have a passion for healthy living. However, since they have not been overweight or transformed adverse health issues, they will probably not understand the struggles that arise when doing some heavy transformational work on yourself. This is why it may be a great choice to work with someone who has been through some sort of health issues that are similar to those you want to transform.
Question: How can I benefit from your Health Coaching?
Answer: Your personalized health coaching program will radically improve your health and happiness. Together, we will explore concerns specific to you and your body. We will also discover the transformational tools you can use for living a healthy and balanced life. Most approaches to nutrition focus on counting calories, restricting carbs, eliminating fats and increasing proteins.
My approach does not consist of creating outdated lists of dietary restrictions or needless comparative contrasts of good and bad foods. Instead, I work exclusively with each client in understanding their individual needs to create a balanced, healthy and happy life. There is no one-size-fits-all diet! No one diet works for everyone, so I will guide you to find the food and lifestyle choices that best support you exclusively. I will support you in making gradual, lifelong changes that enable you to reach your current and future health goals.
Establishing a coaching relationship with me is right for you if:
- You want to make positive healthy life changes but you’re not sure where to start
- You wish you could lose weight without feeling like you’re starving yourself half to death
- You are confused by all the conflicting health information and diets out there
- You want to check more off your to-do list if only you had the energy to do it
- You want to find a fun and rewarding exercise routine that works
- You feel like at any minute you might just completely lose it from all the stress
- You are struggling to find your true passion and identity
- You wish you could feel more comfortable in your own body
- You succumb to food cravings which cause you to feel out of control
The popular solution to common health issues these days is to isolate conditions and treat local symptoms individually. Medications are often prescribed to alleviate the symptoms of many lifestyle related illnesses (such as obesity, inflammation and diabetes).
Separation of the health condition or illness from the whole body and treating it with drugs is what causes imbalance and side effects to occur. My programs involve working with my clients to create a happy, healthy life. This is achieved through a flexible, fun and rewarding approach. I practice a whole body concept to health and wellness, which means that I look at how all areas of your life are connected.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Does stress at your job or in your relationship cause you to overeat?
- Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent you from exercising?
- Have you put aside your spiritual/inspirational connection and practice due to a lack of time?
- Do you find yourself eating when you are not hungry?
- What feelings and emotions come up for you when you overeat or binge eat?
As we work together, we will look at how all parts of your life affect your health as a whole. Although having a coach is a great way to get you on a path to sustaining amazing health, it is not meant to be a used as a permanent arrangement. Relying on health coaching for extended periods of time can be compared to needing a cane then a crutch and eventually walker or wheelchair.
Effective health coaching will give you all the tools you need to take your health into your own hands. This enables you to be your own health coach. I said at the beginning of this book, I am not an extra-ordinary person; I am an average Joe who is committed to seeking out extraordinary experiences and knowledge. Those two combined create the basis for experiencing wisdom. As I also said before, all this information is available in the technology age we are blessed (and cursed) to live in today.
What if you could feel your best – every single day? As your Health Coach, I am your personal advocate for living a healthy and balanced life; full of energy, love, and happiness. Learn more about health coaching.
Question: What is the difference between a Health Coach, a Nutritionist and a Registered Dietitian (RD)?
Answer: Registered Dieticians (RDs) receive a more scientific approach to nutritional training. For example, they are trained to administer nutritional advice in medical settings and analyze dietary intake. RDs play a different role than health coaches in the health and wellness of a client, and both play an increasingly significant role in the health-care of the future.
Nutritionists help you examine your eating habits and guide you in choosing a healthier lifestyle. They also diagnose certain diseases related to nutrition, discuss preventative maintenance, food/nutrition science, and use nutrient management to enhance response to health conditions. Nutritionists usually work in settings such nursing homes, schools, hospitals, spas, and restaurants.
A health coach is a holistic (whole body) wellness authority and supportive mentor. They have a broad understanding of the principals of good nutrition and have developed tools to apply them to daily life. Health coaches are trained to support clients with their health goals and empower them to make lasting changes in their behavior and lifestyle. Health coaches tackle issues such as weight loss, headaches, chronic fatigue and people in general who don’t have major health conditions, but would like to improve their overall health and well-being. They don’t prescribe medication, or tell clients to stop taking medication. Instead, health coaches recommend simple, drug free approaches to proper nutrition, weight loss, diet and exercise.
Holistic health coaching will focus on relationships, hobbies, career, emotions, physical activity and how these aspects of your whole self are related to nutrition. Health coaches do not isolate and treat symptoms nor do they separate any aspects of whole body wellness. They work on bringing physical, mental, emotional and spiritual nutrition into balance in a way that is fun, educational and free of shame, judgment or guilt.
Question: Do you have any religious affiliation?
Answer: I am not affiliated with any religion. One of the foundational elements of my coaching is something I call non-physical food. Non physical foods are elements that nourish us at a much deeper level than the food we actually eat, including spirituality. Please click here to learn more about non-physical foods.
For some, this may mean following the tenets of an organized religion. For others, it may mean taking a walk outside and reconnecting to nature. I support my clients in finding an element of spirituality or inspiration in their lives that works for them.
Question: Is your coaching a vegetarian/vegan or raw food approach to nutrition?
Answer: I encourage a truly holistic approach; not just eating according to food movements or the most popular food theory at the moment, but noticing each person’s life as a whole. This unique approach to nutrition means I recognize that no one diet works for everyone. I like to empower clients to explore different ways of eating. This freedom will open pathways to create a personalized approach that is appropriate for the individual depending on their age, health and activity level, where they live, personal tastes and preferences.
Question: How much does health coaching cost?
Answer: The initial consultation is $50 with no obligation to enroll in any coaching programs or services. My coaching programs will open you up to seeing possibilities where there once were none. I am not in this field to become rich coaching people. I am for damn sure not here to promote any diets or sell supplements, powders or pills either. I am in it because I love people and want everyone to experience the most powerful version of themselves, NOW. I happen to get paid doing so, because it is an exchange of energy.
I share my knowledge, research and experiences with you in exchange for payment. It is a fair trade. I have many years invested into my work and deserve to be compensated accordingly for the information I provide. Some people have issues when it comes to the price of health coaching, but fail to realize and understand a very important concept. That concept is you don’t work for free, do you? Well, if you are in a position to just volunteer, that is a different story. I am just saying that you cannot expect to get any return value from investing nothing.
You have to ask yourself this question: How much would you pay to experience living your life having reached all of your health and wellness goals? I honestly don’t think there even is a price you can put on something like that because it is a priceless experience. Trust, me I have been there and know what it is like. It took a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and beers to learn what I know and experience what I have.
The question is… How much would you be willing to pay to experience your best health?
My health coach pricing does vary from person to person. It is determined by what your personalized program consists of. There is no set base rate for each coaching session because every session is unique and will involve different content each time. However, when it comes to your health, there should be no price tag (within reason of course). Without your health, you cannot fully enjoy life. Just remember that if the value you get exceeds your expense, the experience is priceless. I work with my client’s budget and needs to come up with a reasonable plan. Being able to share my secrets on living a healthy and balanced life is extremely rewarding to me; especially in this time of dire need for a holistic intervention in the health of people.
When value far exceeds cost, it becomes a priceless investment. Are you ready to start investing in your health?
Question: Do you see clients who only live on the West Coast in Florida?
Answer: Although I meet with clients in person living in and around Florida’s Suncoast, you don’t have to live in Florida to work with me. I also hold consultations and sessions remotely anywhere in the USA via phone or Skype.
Question: Do you take health insurance?
Answer: While I do not accept health insurance, health coaching services may be reimbursable through a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA), or may be deductible as a medical expense, in accordance with IRS guidelines.
Question: Do I need a regular Physician if I am seeing a Health Coach?
Answer: A Health Coach is not a substitute for your Physician. Health Coaches do not diagnose illness, prescribe medications, treat medical conditions or give medical advice. I can, however, work closely with your Physician to ensure you are receiving the best and most comprehensive overall healthcare possible. Even if you have a serious health issue, I can still be a great source of help by assisting you in modifying your lifestyle due to common issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and high cholesterol.
